So it's that time again - the summer olympics are upon us. I'm pretty happy they've changed the format of the olympics from having both winter and summer games in the same year to alternating every two years too. Many people argue over which they like better - summer or winter games. Being somewhat of a skier, I usually find myself leaning towards a preference for the winter games. There's nothing like watching the downhill ski competition or the insane ski jumps.
But we can't count out the summer games either. There's boxing, which usually ends up providing us with future pros (like Oscar De Lahoya, Evander Holyfield from the games in Korea). There's basketball, which shockingly has the US NBA players getting beat by players who can actually shoot jump shots and play defense. How about that? As a guy who still tries to play organized b-ball, I'd say it's kind of refreshing to see fundamentals win out over playing above the rim (I can hear it now, "he's not rooting for the USA! He's un-American!").
But the olympics is one of the times I actually do feel filled with pride for the USA athletes. I'll pretty much watch any competitions and pull for whoever is in it (I'm sure most of us will always feel this way, regardless of what country we hail from). Women's softball? Wow, how about the US team? Track and field events are all great to watch. The swimming events are also amazing. Shame on the media here in the US for downplaying Michael Phelps achievements simply because he did not match Mark Spitz record of 7 golds (6 golds at age 19 is still amazing). I'll even watch the gymnastics with great enthusiasm (men's and women's). And for the record, Paul Hamm deserved to win the all around gold, but the Alexei Nemov got robbed in the high bar competion last night, plain and simple. The fans booed for 8 minutes straight after his scores came in, while Paul Hamm had to stand there and wait for the noise to die down. Much to his credit, he pulled off a pretty nice routine himself and won the silver medal. But I still think no one was better than Nemov on the high bar last night ...
But on to the really important stuff - women's beach volleyball. I'm sorry, but in addition to being incredible athletes, are all of these women incredibly hot or is it just me? Take a look at the two finalists for the gold medal these games (USA and Brazil).
 USA Team of Walsh/May
 Brazillian Team of Behar/Shelda
Come on, if that doesn't qualify as the best "sports uniforms" ever, I don't know what do. And don't you love the way they hug each other after the match is over? Ah, the beauty of sport. I guess as women's sports become more popular, so too, will the focus on athletes that are not only talented in their sport, but hot looking too. I'm not a chauvanist, I swear. Ask my wife. But who can deny I'm on to something here? Famous Russian gymnast, Svetlana Khorkina posed for the Russian equivalent of Playboy - yes we have the photos here on Goofball. And take a look at Amanda Beard, multi-medal swimmer in her new photo layout.
Yes, I will be more than a little sad when the games are over ... Why not join the rest of us on the inside and get all of Goofball.com? |
